Suffix: A short word consisting of one to four letters added to the end of a root word is called a suffix. The function of the new word is different from that of the root word. For example, the word ‘friend’. When the suffix ‘ship’ is added, it is written as ‘friendship’, which means the state of being friends.
There are some common suffixes that we use frequently:
- -ness: happy-happiness,
- -ing: eat-eating,
- -ity: mature-maturity,
- -ry: brave-bravery,
- -ful: beauty-beautiful,
- -ed: pick-picked,
- -ly: quick-quickly, etc.
