Mohammed Zubair is an Indian journalist, fact-checker, and the creator of the Alt News website. He was born and raised in Bangalore, Karnataka, and was previously a software engineer. A fact-checking website is operated by the Indian non-profit organisation Alt News.

Mohammed Zubair Biography 

On December 29, 1988, Mohammed Zubair was born into a Muslim family. Karnataka’s Bengaluru is where Zubair was born. He is about thirty-six years old now. He is a well-known journalist and fact-checker. 

Zubair, co-founder of the fact-checking website Alt News, was summoned by Delhi police for interrogation and subsequently taken into custody on June 27, 2022. Due to his reportage on religious freedom, Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair was detained in Delhi.

An inquiry into a 2018 post that was seen to be derogatory toward a Hindu deity led to the arrest. Zubair was accused of inciting hatred and committing nefarious deeds to incite religious sentiment. He was freed the same day after the Supreme Court granted temporary bail in each of the six cases.

Why did the TN Government give the award to Mohammed Zubair?

The Tamil Nadu government honoured journalist Mohammed Zubair on January 26, 2024, by giving him an award for communal harmony. Zubair’s fact-checking articles dispelled rumors that Hindi-speaking migrant labourers were being attacked in the state, prompting the BJP to call him a “biassed manipulator.”

Chief Minister MK Stalin gave Zubair the Kottai Ameer Communal Harmony Award, which comes with a medal, diploma, and Rs 25,000, at the Republic Day festivities on the Marina Beach as Governor RN Ravi watched.

In addition to being a resident of the Krishnagiri area and co-founder of the fact-checking website AltNews, Zubair was given a citation stating that he was being honoured for his contributions to upholding communal peace.

Mohammed Zubair Family, Early & Personal Life 

On December 29, 1988, Mohammed Zubair was born in India. Mohammed Zubair has always enjoyed bringing false information to light, even as a teenager. 

Zubair’s parents and birthplace are still unknown. After receiving his degree from the M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, he worked with Nokia for more than 10 years as a software developer.

After that he started his career as journalist and Still, it was certain that he had made significant advancements as an Indian journalist. His accounts started as soon as he joined Alt News as a co-founder.

Additionally, Alt News analyses the disinformation and identifies the majority of it. They utilise Facebook’s CrowdTangle, a technology used by publishers to study how content travels online, to monitor Facebook pages that have at some point distributed false material and are on either extremity of the ideological spectrum.

As far as we are aware, Mohammed Zubair has kept his personal life off the internet. He has dedicated his entire existence to the Alt News website. Nevertheless, he has received several threats and acts of violence owing to the difficulties of his job.

Mohammed Zubair Career

After completing his education, Zubair worked for Nokia as a software developer.  He worked with Nokia for almost a decade. In 2016, Mohammed and his friend Pratik Sinha co-founded Alt News Independent Media. Pratik was a software developer in the past.

Alt News was launched in 2017 by Zubair and Pratik Sinha, a fellow former software developer. For over a year, Zubair helped Sinha manage the website while still working for Nokia.

In September 2018, he eventually quit his job at Nokia to work full-time at Alt News. He was named to the board of directors of the Pravda Media Foundation, which runs Alt News, on December 16, 2019.

The 2022 Muhammad remarks controversy began when India’s ruling party, BJP, spokeswoman Nupur Sharma made controversial remarks about the Islamic prophet Muhammad during a Times Now debate on the Gyanvapi Mosque dispute. 

Sharma alleged the clip was edited and shared on social media, leading to accusations of rape and death threats. Times Now deleted the video, and Sharma defended her comments, accusing Zubair of editing it. Zubair was arrested in other cases.
