Maldives President Biography – Mohamed Muizzu Early Life & Political Career

On November 17, 2023, Mohamed Muizzu was chosen to serve as Maldives’ president. With 50.04% of the vote, he defeated Solih, who received 46.04% of the vote.In the Maldives, he is a very prosperous politician.

Maldivian politician Muhammad Muizzu was born on June 15, 1978, and has been the country’s president since November 17, 2023. 

Following the jail sentence of the previous president Abdulla Yameen due to grave charges of corruption, he was chosen as his party’s nominee. Abdulla Yameen was not allowed to run for office, so he was selected as his successor. 

Before receiving nomination from the People’s National Congress to run for president in 2023, he held the position of Housing Minister under Presidents Waheed Hassan and Abdulla Yameen. He also served as Mayor of Male. In that election, he defeated incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Mohamed Muizzu Early Life

Muizzu attended the oldest school in the Maldives, Majeediyya School. He completed a PhD in civil engineering at the University of Leeds after earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees in architectural engineering at the University of London.

He received his PhD in 2009, concentrating on the effects of temperature and time on monolithic concrete with reinforcing roof slab-wall. Moreover, he holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the American Project Management Institute (PMI).

Mohamed Muizzu Political Career 

Muizzu was appointed Male’s Minister of Housing and Environment in 2012 and remained in that role until his resignation in 2023. He was in charge of the Sinamale Bridge and several other infrastructure projects while a member of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA). 

Muizzu became part of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) following the 2018 presidential election, and in 2019 he was named vice president. He became the first mayor of Male to be chosen directly by the populace in 2021, and he served a five-year term as mayor. 

Muizzu worked together with the populace during his term, promoting decentralization and local body empowerment.

Following his plurality victory in the initial round of the 2023 Maldivian presidential election with 46.06% of the vote, he moved on to the second round on September 30, 2023.

In the rerun, he defeated incumbent Solih with 54.04% of the vote to win the presidency. On November 17, 2023, Muizzu was officially sworn in as the next president.Additionally, Muizzu promised to free previous president Yameen from a jail cell.

Personal Life of Mohamed Muizzu 

Mohammed Muizzu was  born in Male, Maldives in 1978, married First Lady Sajidha Mohamed on May 18, 2003. They have three children. Muizz’s father, Abdul Rahman, was a judge and religious scholar. 

His mother’s name is Husna Adam. His half-sister, Fathimath Saudha, is a PNC candidate in the Nilandhoo constituency. The estimated net worth of Mohamed Muizzu is $15 million.

Mohamed Muizzu was awarded the Bodu Rasgefaanu title by the Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MNACI)’s Highest Honor in recognition of his work and contributions to the Maldives construction sector. 

Mohamed Muizzu Initiatives

On 17 November 2023 after taking office, Muizzu became the ninth president of the sovereign nation of the Maldives. He was the 4th person to be elected through democratic processes and the sixth native of Malé to hold the office. 

  • The Maldivian government declared in January 2024 that Muizz’s government has been in talks with the US government about PayPal services in the Maldives. Muizz’s government has continued to maintain ties with the US government, just like other Maldivian governments do.
  • Muizzu made the decision in January 2024 to review the Economic Policies and create a development bank in the Maldives.
  • On January 7, pro-China candidate Muizzu landed in China. His campaign seeks to lessen Indian sway over affairs in the Maldives. All Indian soldiers are to withdraw from the Maldives, according to Muizzu.
  • At the unveiling of his manifesto on August 20, 2023, Muizz declared that his government would prioritize upholding the independence of the Maldives while also maintaining close ties with other nations. He emphasized that his administration would not exclusively support one country. 
  • In Muizz’s 100 Days, he initiated the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives, ended secret agreements threatening the country’s independence, and appealed against the International Tribunal’s ruling to lose part of the South Sea.
