Lenten Season 2024 – Holy Week Date and How is it observed?

A period of introspection, confession, and preparation for Easter, which honours Jesus Christ’s resurrection, is known as Lent. Many Christians follow 40 days of fasting (excluding Sundays) during Lent. It began on February 14 and will finish on March 28 of 2024

Lenten Season 2024

Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2024, is the first day of Lent. A church’s priest or pastor will dip their finger into a tray of ashes on Ash Wednesday, a historically depressing festival, and sprinkle the ashes in the shape of a cross across the foreheads of worshipers. Easter, which celebrates Christ’s resurrection, is approached with preparation over the Lenten season.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of this 40-day period, which finishes on Holy Thursday (not including Sundays). Christians observe prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as a way to get closer to God and turn from their sins during Lent.

On Wednesday, February 14th, 2024, Lent will begin, and it will conclude on Thursday, March 28th. The Lenten season might look a little different for each person, according to The Diocese of Paterson Catholic Schools Office.

While some people choose to give up particular foods or habits for Lent, others may choose to offer alms, or contribute to charity, during this time. However, one crucial thing that the majority of individuals do is fasting. Self-control is exhibited by fasting, “to follow Christ’s will more sincerely”.

How is the 2024 Lenten Season observed?

Giving up something important in your life is a popular method to commemorate Lent, and it may also help those who observe it think back on Jesus’ death on the cross for their benefit.

You may give up whatever you love, like soda, sweets, alcohol, etc., or you can give up a time-consuming habit, like watching TV or browsing Instagram. Ideally, you will then substitute these activities with spiritual practices, like reading your Bible or praying.

Other methods to mark Lent include sharing resources with people in need and attending church services more frequently. Numerous Christian religions advocate both volunteering and making donations to charities that aid the underprivileged.

The idea of Lent is not to concentrate on your own personal sacrifice of giving up anything, but to acknowledge that Jesus made an absolutely incredible sacrifice for humanity that has saved us and changed our lives.

Lenten Season 2024

What’s the Purpose of Lent and why is it observed for 40 days?

The intention and goal of the Lenten season is to be ready for Easter, the biggest feast on the Christian calendar. Easter honours the central event in the Christian faith—the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave.

Christians commemorate Lent in imitation of Jesus, who, before starting his public ministry, fasted and prayed for forty days in the desert. During Lent, Christians reflect on their lives, show their love for God and neighbor, and practice fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.

Easter Sunday occurs on Sunday, March 31, 2024. Lent is forty days long and starts 46 days before Easter Saturday. It is only observed from Monday through Saturday of each week as Sundays are seen as a celebration of the Resurrection. The forty days are meant to symbolize the time Jesus fasted in the desert before starting his public ministry.

Lenten Season Holy Week 2024

The final week of Lent, or the season leading up to Easter, is Holy Week 2024. It starts on March 24th, Palm Sunday, and finishes on March 30th, Holy Saturday. Christians remember Jesus Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection during Easter week by participating in a variety of liturgies and devotions.

Palm Sunday-March 24

  • The day commemorated by the crowds who greeted Jesus with palm branches and cried “Hosanna” upon his arrival in Jerusalem. As a sign of the congregation’s welcome, Catholics bring blessed palm branches into churches.

Holy Monday-March 25

  • Holy Monday is the day that honours Jesus’ teachings and purification of the Jerusalem Temple. In Christian tradition, it initiates the season of activities leading up to Easter Sunday.

Holy Tuesday-March 26

  • During Holy Week, Holy Tuesday is the day when Jesus teaches and tells parables, and when he continues to clash with Jerusalem’s religious officials.

Holy Wednesday-March 27

  • On this day of Holy Week, Judas Iscariot decided to turn on Jesus in order to deceive the ecclesiastical establishment.

Holy Thursday-March 28

  • The Last Supper is remembered on this day, when Jesus established the Eucharist and washed his followers’ feet. The Lord’s Supper Mass is attended by Catholics, and it involves the moving of the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of rest as well as the washing of feet.

Good Friday-March 29

  • This commemorative day honours Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross. On this day, Catholics celebrate the cross with adoration, fasting, and prayer. The 14 hours of Jesus’ agony are followed by the Stations of the Cross, which are also frequently prayed.

Holy Saturday-March 30

  • Easter Sunday marks the transition from Good Friday to joy, with Catholics attending the Easter Vigil, which celebrates the Resurrection, includes blessings, singing, readings, baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist.
