Drug Payment Scheme
In the DPS, an Irish person or family will pay no more than €80 per calendar month for certified prescribed drugs and medicines and some appliances for use by themselves or their family in that month.
There is no means of testing; you are qualified to have one as long as you are usually a Republic of Ireland resident. “Ordinarily resident” refers to your intention to live in the Republic of Ireland for at least one year.
The program includes the applicant, his or her spouse or partner, children under eighteen or, if in full-time study, under twenty-three years of age.
Regardless of age, a dependent living in the house with a physical/intellectual handicap or sickness who does not have a medical card and cannot fully support herself/herself could be included.
Objectives of the Drug Payment Scheme
Introduced with numerous important goals was the DPS:
- The DPS lessens family financial burden by regulating the monthly use of prescription drugs and medical equipment. Those with chronic diseases or ailments that call for frequent medication especially need this.
- One major obstacle to obtaining required drugs is often high expenses. The DPS seeks to remove or at least lessen this barrier so that everyone, from all walks of life, may get the pharmaceuticals they need.
- Often, non-adherence to recommended pharmaceutical regimens is related in great part to cost. Reducing out-of-pocket costs helps the DPS inspire people to follow their prescription plans, therefore improving their health and minimizing the need for more expensive medical treatments.
- The DPS is in line with more general public health objectives including the treatment and prevention of chronic illnesses, lower hospital admissions, and enhancement of general population quality. The program helps these goals by making drugs more reasonably priced.
