Cyclone Kirrily Disaster Relief Payment, Eligibility and how to apply?

Residents and local councils can now get assistance with response and recovery costs from the disaster relief program for Tropical Cyclone Kirrily. Residents of Burdekin Shire Council and Townsville City Council are now eligible to apply for many grants which range from $180-$200 for individuals and $900-$4200 for families with five or more members. 

Cyclone Kirrily Disaster Relief Payment 

The Townsville City Council, the Burdekin and Hinchinbrook Shire Councils, and the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council have all requested disaster aid to help with the costs of responding to Tropical Cyclone Kirrily and making repairs. 

Through the disaster recovery funding arrangements jointly financed by the federal and Queensland governments, grants of up to $180 for individuals and up to $900 for families of five or more were announced on Saturday night.

After ex-tropical storm Kirrily toppled trees and brought down power lines in the northeast of the state, a town in Queensland is once again in the recovery phase, while new flood warnings are in place for other regions.

Overnight, 270 calls for assistance were received by the Queensland State Emergency Service, most of which were fallen trees, powerlines, and debris. At the height of the storm, 66,000 households were left without power, and as of this morning, about 49,000 residences remain without electricity.

Cyclone Kirrily Disaster Relief Payment Eligibility 

You are eligible for Cyclone Kirrily Disaster Relief Payment if you meet the following requirements. 

  • To submit an online application, you must be at least eighteen years old and provide identification (ID), bank account information, a working email address, a driver’s licence, and a Medicare card.

As the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Kirrily moves into northern Queensland, thousands of people in Townsville are still without electricity. On Thursday night, areas saw strong gusts and 100 to 150 mm of rain, although there was little evidence of property damage.
