CBSE modifies Evaluation Pattern for Class 11, 12, Check Details

CBSE makes significant alterations in the composition of question papers, Focus more on Competency-based Questions

CBSE Modifies Evaluation Pattern for Class 11, 12 – The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced modifications to the assessment and evaluation system for classes 11 and 12 starting from the academic year 2024-25. According to a report from news agency, the upcoming exams of class 11 and 12 will feature a greater emphasis on competency-based questions, evaluating students’ ability to apply concepts in real situations.

A circular issued by CBSE on April 3 states that the weightage of constructed response questions, including short answer and long answer type questions, in theory exams will be reduced from 40% to 30%. These adjustments aim to harmonize assessment practices with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for the academic session 2024-25.

Competency-focused questions, such as Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, or similar formats, will now constitute 50% of the total weightage, marking an increase from the previous 40%.

Furthermore, selective-type questions, especially MCQs, will maintain their 20% weightage. However, there will be a decrease in the weightage of constructed response questions, which previously comprised 40%. They will now only make up 30% of the total marks.

The CBSE circular reads, “The main emphasis of the Board was to create an educational ecosystem that would move away from rote memorization and towards learning that is focused on developing the creative, critical and systems thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

There is no change in the composition of question papers for the year-end examination of board theory for class 9 and 10 for the academic session 2024-25
