Eligibility Criteria for Carer’s Allowance

  • You have attained the age of 16.
  • You spend at least 35 hours a week taking care of someone.

  • You are normally living in Scotland, England, or Wales, or you are a member of an armed force that has lived in foreign countries.
  • If your weekly pay is £139 or less.


  • If you are studying 21 hours a week, you do not qualify for the carer’s allowance.

The type of care you provide also determines your qualification for the carer’s allowance, let’s discuss:

  • You should have your bank and work details.
  • Your National Insurance number, or if you have a partner, then your partner’s National Insurance number as well.
  • Your recent payslips or P45 details if you have recently stopped working.
  • Your expense details such as pension contributions, the cost of the person you cared for, or the cost of caring for your children, etc.
  • If you are studying, then your course details will also be required to fill in the form.

Apart from your personal information, you will also need to provide the information of the person you care such as:

  • Name and address of the person you care about.
  • Their National Insurance number if they have any.
