Bereavement Support Payment – Eligibility, Amount and how to apply?

You may be eligible for a Bereavement Support Payment to help with some of the financial burdens you may be carrying if your spouse, civil partner, or cohabiting partner passes away, and you have a kid or children. 

Bereavement Support Payment 

If you have a child or children, you may be eligible to receive the BSP if your husband, civil partner, or cohabiting partner passed away after April 6, 2017. There are certain qualifying requirements, but this benefit isn’t means-tested, so you can apply regardless of your income or employment status. 

Bereavement Support after the death of the spouse, payment provides people with temporary financial help. It takes the place of Bereavement Payment, Widowed Parent’s Allowance, and Bereavement Allowance for those who lost a spouse on or after April 6, 2017. 

There is a one-time lump sum payment and then, based on your eligibility, up to eighteen monthly instalments. This social security benefit is intended to assist those who have just lost their spouse and want additional financial assistance to help them start over. 

How much Bereavement Support Payment be paid? 

The Bereavement Support Payment, which is applicable to any bereavement on or after April 6, 2017, is a combination of several bereavement benefits that were previously available.

You will be given a payment plan with a higher or lower rate if you qualify for Bereavement Support Payment. Every plan has a lump sum payment upfront, followed by up to eighteen monthly instalments.

You must have been pregnant at the time of your partner’s death, be eligible for Child Benefits, or both in order to be eligible for a higher rate of assistance.

Bereavement Support Payment

The higher support rate is £3500 for the first payment, with up to eighteen £350 monthly instalments after that. The lower rate of assistance consists of an upfront payment of £2500 and up to eighteen £100 monthly instalments.

Who is eligible for Bereavement Support Payment? 

Although a Bereavement Support Payment is classified as capital and may influence income-related benefits if it exceeds a specific threshold, it will not affect any other benefits you get. It also does not count toward the benefit cap’s income.

A Bereavement Support Payment may be requested if:

  • your civil partner or spouse passed away on or after April 6, 2017.
  • In every given tax year during their working life, their spouse or civil partner had to pay a minimum of 25 Class 1 or Class 2 National Insurance contributions.
  • When your husband or civil partner passed away, you were not yet of State Pension age. 
  • You either live in a nation with which the UK has a relevant reciprocal agreement or were a resident of the UK at the time of the death. 

How to apply for Bereavement Support Payment? 

You can get a form from the Bereavement Benefits division by calling 0800 085 2463, or you can apply online by downloading an application form from the official website. 

Applying it requires roughly 15 minutes. Your application cannot be saved to be completed later. Your application will time out and you will have to start over if you do not enter anything for over thirty minutes.

  • Here, you may find the list of documents for applying tab “yes” in order to proceed further. Applicant must have:
    • your National Insurance number
    • your partner’s National Insurance number
    • the date your partner died
    • your bank or building society account details
  • Then hit “start now “ and put the required and requested information such as your personal information, your late spouse information and your child(if any) information. 
  • Attach all the essential documents as per the guidelines if requested or asked.
  • Then hit “submit” in order to supply your application for approval and payment. 

After application, when will I get my Bereavement Support Payment? 

If you are qualified, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will try to deposit the first payment into your building society or bank account as soon as possible after receiving your application for Bereavement Support Payment. This usually transpires a few weeks following the submission of your application.

You must file a claim within three months after your partner’s passing in order to be eligible for the entire number of instalments. Up to 21 months after their passing, you can still apply, although your payout can be reduced if you do so after three months.
